"Replication files for ""Measuring Financial Inclusion: Explaining Variation Across and Within Countries"" "
by Asli Demirguc-Kunt and Leora Klapper (2013)

This replication folder contains data and programs that can be used to produce some of the empirical results and figures used in the paper.

"* IMPORTANT NOTE: The Global Findex data come from a survey carried out by Gallup, Inc. as part of the annual Gallup World Poll. A prior confidentiality agreement with Gallup, Inc. prevents us from making publicly available several series used in this paper. "
"Without these series, users will not be able to produce the complete set of empirical results in the paper."

************ 3 Contents of Replication folder *************

This replication folder (Measuring Financial Inclusion.zip) includes the following items:
"i. ""Readme.txt"""
"This Read Me file provides a guide to using the replication files, including the dataset and do-file. It also provides links to additional resources."

"ii. ""micro_WORLD.dta"""
"This is the main dataset (Stata 12 format) with individual-level financial inclusion data for 147 economies, and a series of covariates. This dataset is identical to the microdata set found at ww.worldbank.org/globalfindex"

"iii. ""economy level_public.dta"""
"This is the dataset (Stata 12 format) with economy-level covariates (GDP per capita, etc) for 147 economies."

"iii. ""Measuring Financial Inclusion.do"""
"This is the do-file to merge the individual-level and economy-level datasets. Further, it contains the code needed to replicate Figures 1-14, and Regression Tables 1 and 2. Figures 4 and 6 and Regression Table 2 cannot be replicated because they require data that is not publicly available. "

************ 4 Using the replication files *****************

"To run the replication do-file, users must save all datasets and the do-file in the same folder. "
The local path of the folder has to be replaced in line 47 of the do-file. Use line 49 to create a subfolder into which the replication results will be outputted. The do-file relies on outsheet and xmltab to output the regression results into an Excel-readable file.
"If xml_tab is not installed in your local Stata version, please type ssc install xml_tab in your Stata command line."

************ 5 Data Limitations *************************

"Due to our confidentiality agreement, not all variables used in the ""Measuring Financial Inclusion.do"" are available in the dataset. Figures 4 and 6 and Regression Table 2 cannot be replicated because they require data that is not publicly available. "

"The following variables are NOT included in the dataset (""micro_WORLD.dta""): "

	psu
	strata
	rural	(rural vs urban residency)
	hhs	(log of household size)
empl_1	(employment category: employed for employer)
	empl_2	(employment category: unemployed)
empl_3	(employment category: out of workforce)
	empl_4	(excluded employment category)
	inc_c	(continuous income variable)
	married	(marital status)
	divorced (maritual status)

"Microdata for Iran, Islamic Rep. was not publicly released due to inconsistent methdology. Interviews were conducted via telephone from Turkey."
